Founding Note

Agency in the Age of AI: why the next economy needs owners, not users

Our founding thesis on how artificial intelligence redistributes economic power — and how Vestinit invests to widen it.

Artificial intelligence is not, in itself, the destination. It is an instrument — one of several now reshaping how economic power is distributed. That distinction matters, because the same technology can concentrate capability in a handful of platforms or extend it to millions of people, enterprises and communities. The outcome is not predetermined. It is a design choice, and it is an investment choice.

Vestinit exists to make that choice deliberately. Our founding proposition is simple to state and demanding to practise: technological progress should expand economic agency rather than dependency, broaden opportunity rather than exclusion, and build resilience rather than fragility. We call the framework that governs those decisions ImpactOS — not a product, but the operating doctrine by which we decide what to build, how to build it, and how value should compound over time.

From users to owners

Most of the current AI economy is being designed around users. Users consume a service, generate data, and depend on a system they do not control. That is a workable consumer model and a poor foundation for economic agency. An owner has something a user does not: optionality, bargaining power, and a claim on the value they help create.

The shift from user to owner is the through-line of our thesis. It is why we ask, of every venture, a single primary test: does this materially improve ownership, optionality, bargaining power, dignity or resilience for the people it serves? A business can be technically impressive and commercially attractive and still fail that test. When it does, efficiency alone is not sufficient justification.

Agency has more than one form

Economic agency is the most visible form, but it is not the only one. We build toward six: economic, digital, human, community, national and intergenerational agency. Digital agency is the ability to participate in digital systems without being captured by them. Human agency is the preservation of judgement where automation would quietly remove it. Intergenerational agency is the capacity to pass on capability and capital, not just consumption. A venture that strengthens one form while eroding another has not, on balance, built agency.

Discipline is the point, not the caveat

None of this works as philanthropy. Impact that depends indefinitely on subsidy is rarely durable. Sustainable impact requires strong unit economics, repeatable distribution and lasting competitive advantage.

That is why our doctrine is expressed as a discipline rather than an aspiration. Every concept Vestinit considers is assessed against a standing 100-point rubric weighted across buildability and technical leverage, impact depth and strategic agency, market opportunity and commercial viability, and execution and ecosystem advantage. A concept that scores poorly on buildability is rejected or redesigned before anything else is discussed. The rubric supports judgement; it does not replace it.

Why an Observatory

Deciding well at this pace requires seeing clearly. The Vestinit AI Economy & Workforce Observatory is a developing capability intended to connect evidence to action — tracking AI adoption, task-level change in how work is done, the concentration of economic power, and the emerging opportunities where a new venture could widen agency rather than narrow it. It is early. We would rather describe it honestly as it develops than overstate it as finished.

The next economy will have owners and it will have users. Which one most people get to be is still being decided. We intend to invest, build and compound on the side of ownership.
